Report focuses on the benefits of nickel-zinc batteries over
lead-acid and lithium-ion chemistries

The Impact Report highlights NiZn battery chemistry as a safe, high power density, advanced battery technology for data center backup power. NiZn batteries can address a pressing need for data center operators who are looking for ways to offset the many issues associated with traditional lead-acid and newer lithium-based batteries.

“The NiZn battery systems offer better characteristics than traditional lead-acid batteries, including a smaller and lighter footprint, lower maintenance, higher power density and longer lifespan,” wrote 451 Research Senior Analyst, Datacenter Technologies, Jeffrey Fidacaro. “Uptime and resiliency continue to be paramount in datacenter design, with UPS equipment expected to play a continued role although over time more UPS’s are likely to become more distributed. Because energy efficiency on double conversion UPS systems is reaching up to 97% (or greater) it could be argued that incremental gains are de minimis. Therefore, alternative battery chemistries for datacenters that offer relatively smaller footprints and lower total cost of ownership (TCO), such as NiZn and Li-ion will likely see increasing adoption.”
The Impact Report describes the benefits of NiZn batteries over both lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. Highlights include that NiZn battery life can be two to five times that of lead-acid and the cycle life of NiZn can be up to 10 times that of lead-acid in selected depth of discharge usage models.
The report notes, “Comparing NiZn to Li-ion, NiZn offers a greater power density (measured in watts/kg), meaning faster discharge and recharge rates and it does not dissipate significant heat in the process.” NiZn “can also operate in a wider temperature envelope of -35 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with Li-ion’s recommended range of 50 to 104 degrees F.” The report further highlights the safety, environmental and recyclability advantages of NiZn over Li-ion battery chemistries.
