ZincFive Named as a Sample Vendor in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017
Digital transformation is forcing I&O leaders to rethink the data center, as applications and data move externally to colocation, hosting, cloud and edge, report finds
ZincFive, Inc. the world’s leading provider of nickel-zinc batteries and nickel-zinc based mission critical intelligent uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), announced today that the company has been included in the Gartner Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017 report. The full-length Hype Cycle report is available at gartner.com.1
ZincFive believes its inclusion in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017, highlights the emergence of nickel-zinc battery chemistry as a safe, high power density, advanced battery technology for data center backup power. Nickel-zinc batteries can address a pressing need for data center operators who are looking for ways to offset the many issues associated with traditional lead-acid and newer lithium-based batteries.
In the report, Gartner analysts Henrique Cecci et al., note that infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders and data center professionals are facing a relentless pressure to improve crucial IT services for mission-critical legacy environments, support growth initiatives and reduce operational costs. In the advanced battery technologies category, Mr. Cecci writes, “advanced battery technologies address the most pressing concerns associated with traditional lead-acid batteries such as limited recharge cycles, bulky form factors, difficult maintenance and a replacement cycle of about four years”. Additionally, he writes that, “as an example, Li-Ion batteries can offer additional benefits over traditional lead-acid batteries, such as: up to three times the expected life, with fewer battery replacements required, reducing the risk of downtime posed by battery replacement; 50-80% less footprint (battery room footprint reduction); 67% less weight for the same energy storage, up to 10 times more discharge cycles, depending on chemistry, technology, temperature and depth of discharge; and 10-40% less total cost of ownership (TCO) over 10 years (when comparing with traditional lead-acid solution).” The report identifies the benefit rating of advanced battery technologies as being transformational.
Gartner is an independent research and advisory firm focused on Information Technology and other industries. Since 2013, Gartner has published their Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, formerly known as the Hype Cycle for Data Center Power and Cooling Technologies. Updated annually, Gartner’s Hype Cycle reports provide a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption of technologies and applications, and how they are potentially relevant to solving real business problems and exploiting new opportunities.
From ZincFive’s perspective, recognition by Gartner is a result of the combination of ZincFive’s nickel-zinc battery chemistry providing a safe, high power density alternative to lead-acid and lithium based battery chemistries, and ZincFive’s modular, intelligent UPS design, which provides flexible scaling options to ensure strategic use of capital in a “fail-small” configuration. Nickel-zinc uniquely provides a high-power density battery equivalent to lithium based power cells, with a safe, highly recyclable, long-life battery format that is ideally suited for today’s demanding data centers and other mission critical applications. The utility of ZincFive’s UPS solutions apply across the industry spectrum from multi-megawatt to edge facilities and ZincFive’s modular approach combined with disruptive battery chemistry provides data center operators new and unique options.
For over five years, ZincFive has been deploying its nickel-zinc based UPS solutions in micro data centers deployed in ruggedized environments for traffic as well as transportation control and management systems. Over 100 city, county, and state/provincial departments of transportation have put their trust in ZincFive’s intelligent solutions to ensure the safety of their communities. ZincFive’s solutions have been historically installed in metal cabinets at signalized intersections or along interstates, demonstrating an extreme operating temperature range, without the use of heating or cooling technologies as required by other battery chemistries.
“We feel that being recognized in the Gartner Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017 report is recognition of ZincFive’s position in the market, as well as the criticality of our solutions to the operational readiness of our customers,” commented Tim Hysell, President and CEO for ZincFive, Inc. “We’re pleased with inclusion in the report and believe it further validates the compelling value of ZincFive’s battery chemistry, which will continue to accelerate our growth and expand our customer base.”
