ZincFive Recognized By 451 Research For
Nickel-Zinc Batteries In Data Center Applications

Report focuses on the benefits of nickel-zinc batteries over
lead-acid and lithium-ion chemistries

PORTLAND, Oregon—(December 2017)ZincFive, Inc. the world’s leading provider of nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries and NiZn based intelligent uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), announced today that the Company is the subject of a 451 Research Impact Report highlighting the utilization of NiZn batteries in data center applications. The full-length Impact Report is available at: 451research.com. 1

The Impact Report highlights NiZn battery chemistry as a safe, high power density, advanced battery technology for data center backup power. NiZn batteries can address a pressing need for data center operators who are looking for ways to offset the many issues associated with traditional lead-acid and newer lithium-based batteries.

451 Research is a preeminent information technology research and advisory company focused on the business of enterprise IT innovation within emerging technology segments and provides timely insight to end user, service provider, vendor and investor organizations worldwide.

“The NiZn battery systems offer better characteristics than traditional lead-acid batteries, including a smaller and lighter footprint, lower maintenance, higher power density and longer lifespan,” wrote 451 Research Senior Analyst, Datacenter Technologies, Jeffrey Fidacaro. “Uptime and resiliency continue to be paramount in datacenter design, with UPS equipment expected to play a continued role although over time more UPS’s are likely to become more distributed. Because energy efficiency on double conversion UPS systems is reaching up to 97% (or greater) it could be argued that incremental gains are de minimis. Therefore, alternative battery chemistries for datacenters that offer relatively smaller footprints and lower total cost of ownership (TCO), such as NiZn and Li-ion will likely see increasing adoption.”

The Impact Report describes the benefits of NiZn batteries over both lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. Highlights include that NiZn battery life can be two to five times that of lead-acid and the cycle life of NiZn can be up to 10 times that of lead-acid in selected depth of discharge usage models.

The report notes, “Comparing NiZn to Li-ion, NiZn offers a greater power density (measured in watts/kg), meaning faster discharge and recharge rates and it does not dissipate significant heat in the process.” NiZn “can also operate in a wider temperature envelope of -35 to 155 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with Li-ion’s recommended range of 50 to 104 degrees F.” The report further highlights the safety, environmental and recyclability advantages of NiZn over Li-ion battery chemistries.

This acknowledgement, by 451 Research, is a result of the combination of ZincFive’s NiZn battery chemistry providing a safe, high power density alternative to lead-acid and lithium based battery chemistries and ZincFive’s modular, intelligent UPS design, which provides flexible scaling options to ensure strategic use of capital in a “fail-small” configuration. The utility of ZincFive’s UPS solutions apply across the industry spectrum from multi-megawatt, to edge facilities and ZincFive’s modular approach combined with disruptive battery chemistry provides data center operators new and unique options.

For over five years, ZincFive has been deploying its NiZn based UPS solutions in micro data centers deployed in ruggedized environments for traffic, as well as transportation control and management systems. Over 100 city, county and state/provincial departments of transportation have put their trust in ZincFive’s intelligent solutions to ensure the safety of their communities. ZincFive’s solutions have been historically installed in metal cabinets at signalized intersections or along interstates, demonstrating an extreme operating temperature range, without the use of heating or cooling technologies as required by other battery chemistries.

“451 Research is in the forefront of researching new technology developments for IT applications and their Impact Report has cited the benefits of our unique nickel-zinc battery technology in the data center,” said ZincFive President and CEO, Tim Hysell. “We’re pleased with their coverage of nickel-zinc battery technology as a superior alternative to traditional lead-acid and lithium-ion chemistries for the data center community.”
