Challenge

Cedar Park, Texas is consistently ranked one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, causing traffic volume to exceed capacity at two intersecting high-volume, high-speed corridors. The intersection serves two important regional arterials with major retailers where local residents and visitors from neighboring communities come to shop, dine, and work. Growing traffic volume resulted in gridlock, potential for illegal turns, violations of right-of-way assignments, and greater risk of dark signals at the intersection.

In partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Cedar Park decided to convert the intersection to a Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI). Due to the complex nature of the CFI’s operation, unfamiliarity to new drivers, and high traffic volumes, it was critical that the intersection never go dark no matter the length of a power outage.

Solution

The ZincFive UPStealth® was installed at the intersection before turning on the new traffic signal. Cedar Park deployed a ZincFive UPStealth® Inverter/Controller with two 500W Battery Panels, five 500W Battery Modules, and a battery HUB to enable the use of the additional batteries. As Cedar Park’s transportation network continues to grow, UPStealth® will play a greater role at major intersections to ensure traffic signals remain on through severe weather or power outages.

Results

In the first year since installation, the ZincFive UPStealth® powered the CFI through 38-minute, 17-minute, and 130-minute outages. It also prevented the controller from power cycling and flashing several times during brown-outs and other irregularities on the incoming power line.
