Challenge

Loveland, Colorado is a beautiful gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Recent job growth, development, and record park attendance has drawn millions to Loveland via US 34, which intersects with I-25. Increased traffic caused more road congestion, safety risks, and power outages, especially during extreme weather like tornadoes, floods, and snow.

Loveland initially deployed a lead-acid battery backup system to provide uninterruptible power, but they were spending too much time and money on maintenance and grew concerned over the toxicity and environmental risks of lead-acid batteries.

ZincFive nickel-zinc UPS for backing up signalized intersections & ITS.

Solution

Loveland’s Traffic Management team applied for and was awarded a Federal Highway Grant to purchase new traffic signal cabinets and the ZincFive UPStealth® which offered an environmentally safe, maintenance-free alternative to their existing battery backup system. Loveland identified the highest risk intersections and deployed UPStealth® systems at 42 of their 93 traffic signal locations. Nickel-zinc UPStealth® is now required with construction of all new traffic signals. Their goal is to have all signals and other intelligent transportation system (ITS) devices, such as variable message signs and remote weather information systems, backed up by nickel-zinc UPStealth® Battery Backup Systems.

Results

According to Loveland’s Traffic Engineering Division, the UPStealth® systems are performing even better than expected and in all weather extremes. In a recent power outage in the epicenter of downtown, all traffic signals and ITS field systems protected by the UPStealth® remained running without interruption. In another example, a surprise spring snowstorm in Estes Park compromised power all over Loveland, but every traffic signal protected by nickel-zinc UPStealth® remained operating.

  • 42 signal locations
  • Wide operating temperature range
  • No routine maintenance

“Our goal is to have all our signals and other ITS devices, such as variable message signs and remote weather information systems, backed up using the nickel-zinc UPStealth®. The UPStealth® battery backup systems are performing great and are an important part of our city’s intelligent transportation system plan. The life of these units may prove to be even longer than anticipated – a great surprise to have.” Bill Hange, P.E., PTOE, City of Loveland, Colorado City Traffic Engineer
