ZincFive Named as a Sample Vendor in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017

ZincFive believes its inclusion in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Data Center Infrastructure, 2017, highlights the emergence of nickel-zinc battery chemistry as a safe, high power density, advanced battery technology for data center backup power. Nickel-zinc batteries can address a pressing need for data center operators who are looking for ways to offset the many issues associated with traditional lead-acid and newer lithium-based batteries.

In the report, Gartner analysts Henrique Cecci et al., note that infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders and data center professionals are facing a relentless pressure to improve crucial IT services for mission-critical legacy environments, support growth initiatives and reduce operational costs. In the advanced battery technologies category, Mr. Cecci writes, “advanced battery technologies address the most pressing concerns associated with traditional lead-acid batteries such as limited recharge cycles, bulky form factors, difficult maintenance and a replacement cycle of about four years”. Additionally, he writes that, “as an example, Li-Ion batteries can offer additional benefits over traditional lead-acid batteries, such as: up to three times the expected life, with fewer battery replacements required, reducing the risk of downtime posed by battery replacement; 50-80% less footprint (battery room footprint reduction); 67% less weight for the same energy storage, up to 10 times more discharge cycles, depending on chemistry, technology, temperature and depth of discharge; and 10-40% less total cost of ownership (TCO) over 10 years (when comparing with traditional lead-acid solution).” The report identifies the benefit rating of advanced battery technologies as being transformational.
