After a two-year process, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) added ZincFive’s patented, nickel-zinc battery solution, to the agency’s Green Sheets, a trusted products list that cities use to spec for projects.

This marks the first time, ODOT has included an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries, invented in 1859, the same year as Oregon’s statehood. Lead-acid can also pose environmental problems.

ODOT deployed the UPStealth® Battery Backup System at Biggs Junction, Oregon—a once dangerous, heavily used, remote interchange, where weather induced power outages are not uncommon.
“Protecting motorists at Biggs Junction was a big priority for us and the UPStealth is performing just as promised, keeping the power on and reducing accidents and congestion,” said ODOT Traffic Signal Engineer, P.E., Scott Cramer. “There’s less maintenance, decreased cost and longer battery life. One of the biggest selling points is the UPStealth’s flat format fits inside the existing traffic cabinets. We don’t have to build new cabinets. Also, the battery’s environmentally friendly materials mean there’s no risk for hazardous material spills, electrical shock or other catastrophes associated with lead-acid batteries.”
Real Time Intelligence
ODOT is also using UPStealth’s Real-Time Intelligence Connect (RTi Connect™) desktop application for onsite and remote viewing, monitoring and management of performance. Next ODOT hopes to deploy nickel-zinc batteries at traffic signals intersecting with rail lines. “It’s a fairly cheap and easy solution to keeping traffic signals operating at those rail crossings which are a high risk area. Dark signals are never good, especially at a rail crossing,“ said Cramer.
